In Community
As a research collective, we recognize the importance of engaging in research in different ways such as through theater, attending speaking engagements, and engaging with the community. During the Spring of 2023, our Democracy + Media members had the opportunity to engage in these different opportunities. Together we attended events off campus that were able to inform our research. In some cases, our community fellows led these research field trips.
The Magic Theater: The Travelers by Luis Alfaro
The Democracy + Media Lab members visited the Magic theater in San Francisco to witness The Travelers written by Luis Alfaro and directed by Catherine Castellanos. The trip was attended by undergraduate research apprentices, community fellows, work study students, and other community members. The Travelers looked into immigrant life and community in California and is situated within a catholic monastery. The show provided an opportunity for our DM members to witness another form of storytelling through performance.

Fruitvale Community Visit
The Fruitvale community visit was organized by our two community fellows Judy Talaugon and Felipe Kan. Judy is the lead for The Tribunal Project and Felipe Kan is a lead for The Pedagogies of El Buen Vivir Group. It was important for students to visit the community in which their research was focused on. The students also had the opportunity to film, photograph and talk to locals with the support of their community fellow.

A Conversation with Colombian President Gustavo Petro
Our students had the opportunity to witness the President of Colombia speak at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. President Petro spoke on issues regarding the environmental crisis and social justice. Students from our Militarism is Anti-Democratic and JOHonduras U.S Policy and The Making of a Narco State attended the event.

Working Group Invited Speakers
Our working groups invite published authors, scholars, and activists to participate in dialogues and share knowledge on subject matter related to their research. In 2023, these dialogues took place in person at the Latinx Research Center and virtually through Zoom.
Pedagogies of El Buen Vivir and Memoria Colectiva Community Event
This event was organized by The Pedagogies of El Buen Vivir and Memoria Colectiva Group. The event was attended by members of the Mam Community, student researchers and the project advisor Raymond Telles. Leaders from the Mam community led a workshop on three topics from the Maya tradition which were tejidos (weaving), Mayan Mathematics, and Dialogos. Students were able to film, photograph and ask questions to members of the community.

Democracy + Media Community Event
The Democracy + Media Lab started the Spring 2023 Semester with a social event at the Latinx Research Center. The community fellows, undergraduate research apprentices, graduate fellows, work-study students, and other DM community members met in person for a social event with food and refreshments.

Democracy + Media Lab Mid-Semester Retreat
The Democracy + Media Lab organized a mid-semester overnight retreat. The four working groups were invited to share their research at the midpoint of the semester. Community fellows, graduate students from Merced, and San Antonio, and undergraduate students attended the retreat. The presentations took place at the Center for People Power. Working groups displayed their PowerPoint, posters, photographs, and film. The retreat was a space to share their findings, answer questions and gather feedback.

Dialogos Filming Event
Community fellow Felipe Kan and graduate fellow Javier Mateos organized a filming of the dialogos. The event was organized for students to capture a dialogo between Felipe and Orlando, a member of the maya community in Oakland CA. Students and DM project advisors were present.

Voices Set Free Art Builds- In person
The Tribunal Project organized two successful community-wide art builds after a 12-week series of dialogues including readings, archival research, art curation, and analysis this spring. Participants brought their research to life through collaging, painting, and digital media, which was then presented in a public event entitled, Voices Set Free.

Democracy + Media Office Hours
Office hours were held on a weekly basis by our project coordinator Katherine Garcia. Our 20 Undergraduate research apprentices attended one to two times per week in order to collaborate with other members of their working group on research, ask questions, produce content and prepare for events and dialogues.

Democracy + Media Lab Poster Series
The Democracy + Media Poster series was created by artist Cierra Cardenas with the support of each working group. The series honors each working group and their research bringing their research to life through collaging and digital media. The artist Cierra joined the team towards the end of Spring 2023 and was excited to create art that fuzed art and social justice together. Through joining working group meetings, changing colors, speaking to research apprentices, community fellows, and various drafts our working group poster Series came to life.
